What is iGEM?
international Genetically Engineered Machine is a synthetic biology competition. Teams of students of all ages from all over the world work independently on interdisciplinary projects with the help of institutes and professors. The projects should provide solutions to various problems of the world. For example, in addition to genetic modifications, devices or software can be developed.
What do you do at iGEM?
At iGEM you work in a team on an independently chosen project. In doing so, you learn practical work in the laboratory and basic theoretical knowledge with assistance.
The special feature of iGEM is that public relations, networking and cooperation with other teams or from industry are also important. In addition, social media channels are operated and events are organized. Programming skills are also welcome.
In which period does iGEM take place?
The iGEM competition runs from January to November each year.
The next finale, the Giant Jamboree, is scheduled to take place in Paris in November.
How can I apply for iGEM?
The application for 2024 is now closed. What you need to send us:
- An application with a short introduction about yourself and why you want to join the team & a CV
- Short idea of a project in the field of synthetic Biology (0.5 - 1 DIN A4 page, please inform yourself how iGEM / synthetic biology projects are structured)
- Both in English!

Who can apply?
At iGEM, it doesn't matter what you study or how long you study, because everyone can contribute. You can think of it like a company, because there are a lot of other factors important besides science.
The important thing is: to have fun and be motivated to do different kinds of work to perfect the project.
What do I get out of iGEM?
The laboratory work done is credited in CP.
In addition to the many scientific and economic skills that you learn late in your studies or not at all, you come into contact with various institutions, professors and contacts from the business world at an early stage. At the finals in Paris, you meet like-minded students from a variety of countries.
The activities outside the lab are necessary to participate in the finals in Paris.
The iGEM certificate and interdisciplinary knowledge is a good reference for future applications to professors and is generally known by universities. It is not uncommon that iGEM projects develop into real startups or theses are written.
